Fashion designers from across Africa gathered in Ghana’s capital Accra, to attend the Accra Fashion Week which began on October 5.
The theme of the 5-day event was from Batik to Boutique, in order to encourage boutiques and fashion stores in Ghana to begin stocking clothes by Ghanaian designers and fashion brands.
Renowned designers from Africa as well as upcoming ones showcased their latest collections during the festival.
“It’s been two years since it started to make a name and people are getting to know my products. That’s why I came to Ghana to be known in the region,” said Liliane Estievenart, an Ivorian designer.
“I’ve made a lot of impact. A lot of young people look up to me. I have people who are consistently following my designs, the trend. Whatever we bring out, they try to take it up, meaning that its the trend of the year and a lot of people look up to us,” said Yvonne Taiwah, a Ghanaian designer.
The show was held against the backdrop of a major influx of second-hand clothing into Ghana. But this year’s theme is expected to change the mindset of many.
The event is the most talked a bout fashion event in Accra and organisers are planning to make it pan African.
